About This Project

This Tasmanian Pictorial Church Index has been an ongoing research project since the mid-1990s. In 2018 we made the decision to publish our data online for free. Our goal is to provide a digital platform that the general public and contributors could easily navigate the vast amount of data being collected.

While we hope to have covered all the main religious denominations, not every church in Tasmania has been located. Additionally, religious services were often held in private houses, halls, barns and other places.

Some of the issues we encountered while collating the data is that some denominations have changed their name over time. One example is the Church of England which became Anglican. The Library of Congress lists the Roman Catholic Church as just Catholic so we have used the same terminology. Additionally in the 1970s the Methodist and some Congregational and Presbyterian churches formed the Uniting Church. Several churches or buildings were shared with other denominations, some of these we have placed in a category called Multi Denominational.

Not only have the religious denominations changed names, some place names have changed. We have tried to include all known names in this database e.g. Evandale was once called Morven.

We have endeavoured to keep abreast of the current status of each church. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated with this task.
