Overview

The small community of Gray had two churches Methodist and Anglican.

The Gray Methodist church was opened on the 10th September 1899 by the Rev. G.T. Heyward of Newnham Parish. It was described as an ornate structure, well finished within and without. It measured 25 ft x 17 ft and situated in an ideal location within the town, a gift from Mrs Otto Smith.

It cost £124-2-3 to build, but was considerably less than expected thanks to the generous donations by locals.

The newspaper article refers to Gray as 'The Island', as reported:

The Rev. S.J.
Sulllngs is to be complimented on the unqualified success of his endeavour to erect this church, and the residents of Island '
congratulate themselves on the possession
of a splendid building upon which there is no debt.

During the 1930s this church was dismantled and some of the timbers were used throughout the district. The blackwood dado was used in the home of by Mr. Alf. Fauklner of St Marys.
