King Street Church

Rev. Isaac Hardcastle Palfreyman a Methodist Free minister, set up the King Street Church (now Pitt Street) on the corner of Andrew Street, North Hobart.This independent chapel with a school was described as non denominational.

The Mercury newspaper on Monday 26th March 1883 announced that a new place of worship had opened in King Street, with services conducted by Rev. I.H. Palfreyman. The building was 60 feet in length and 20 feet wide and cost £270 to build, when opened it was debt free. Constructed of wood it seated about 200 people.

The following notice appeared in the Mercury newspaper in 1883:

BAPTIST CHURCH, HOBART General Register Office, Hobart

NOTICE - In accordance with Section XV., Act 2, Vict. No. 7, notice is hereby given that a separate building, situated in King-street, Hobart, and known as "King-street Church" has been duly registered as a building, wherein Marriages may be lawfully celebrated.

On Rev. Palfreyman's arrival in Hobart he formed the Temperance movement and the Order of Good Templars, and was the Grand Chief. He passed away 3rd June 1921 at his residence Hardcastle situated on the angle of Arthur and Andrew Streets.

The Rev. Robert Cairns was also connected with the church, he lived a long and full life, dying at the age of 93. Like Rev. Palfreyman he was a man of christian charity.

Only the schoolhouse survives, over the years it has had many uses.
