Overview
The building at 113 York Street was erected as a Baptist Church in 1840. It served the fledgling congregation of the Rev. Henry Dowling who had previously established Australia’s first Baptist congregation, in Hobart. In 1884 the congregation moved into the newly built Baptist Tabernacle at 65 Cimitiere Street.
The Baptists ceased to use the old chapel around 1915, and for a time after that it was used by the Plymouth Bretheren. They moved into the Gospel Hall that they had built on Elizabeth Street around 1940, and from that time the old chapel has been used as a shop.
