Overview
L ying between Lake Sorell, Lake Crescent and the Clyde River the Verwood Estate was advertised in 1859 as a 1500 acres property with a large weatherboard house and stables.
One of the owners of this property was the well-known and notable Mr. George Carr Clarke , who was owner of the near-by property Ellenthorpe. In October 1862 Verwood along with other lots associated with it was advertised for sale as follows:
MR. G.C. CLARKE'S ESTATES - Perhaps the most extensive sale that has ever taken place in this colony is advertised for sale next Wednesday, when the princely estates of GEORGE CARR CLARKE, Esquire, of Ellenthorpe Hall, are to be submitted ... The Estates consist of Lot No 1- The Verwood Estate, containing an area of 9740 acres ...
Later owners were Mr. Charles Archer and Frank Dowling.
Fortnightly Methodist services were held in 1882, when these were unsuccessful, they changed to quarterly from 1904-1910. Mr. R. Agnew purchased the property from the estate of Charles Archer in December 1910.
