Overview

George Carr Clarke was a prominent early settler to the Ross area, along with his wife Hannah they established Ellenthorpe Hall as a refinement school for young ladies. Ellenthorpe is situated 16 kms west of Ross on the Auburn Road.

One of the teachers was Henry Mundy who taught French, music and art, he married one of his students Miss Lavinia Lord. Henry was a noted portrait and landscape painter, mixing with the colonial society of the time. Some of his portraits were of Sir John and Lady Franklin and the Archer family some of which hang in the National Portrait Gallery, Canberra.

During the 1870s Ellenthorpe Hall became a private residence, it was then fortnightly Methodist services were held until 1886. In 1904 services were again conducted until 1910.
