Overview
The Mowbray Heights Methodist Church was a long-awaited project, with the Mowbray Methodist Trust purchasing land in 1928. However, due to the economic hardships of the Great Depression and World War II, construction did not begin until 1952. On June 22nd of that year, Mr. E.G. Hall, the oldest member of the Trust, laid the foundation stone.
To build the church, bricks, flooring, and pews from the old Methodist Church at Lefroy were utilized by W.W. Purse and Sons, with the help of volunteers. The construction process took 9 months and cost around £4000.
On February 14th, 1953, the Mowbray Heights Methodist Church and Sunday School were officially opened and dedicated by Rev. E.L. Verco, the Chairman of the Tasmanian Methodist Assembly, with the assistance of Rev. D.G. Brimacombe of Launceston. The church was located on Invermay Road and today, a new brick building of the Uniting Church stands in its place, located behind the ANZ Bank on the same street.
