Overview

Tenders were called for the construction of the Catholic Church at Strahan in November 1899. The plans were drawn up by architects Austen and Keogh. The church was expected to be completed by January 1900

Land in Harvey Street was purchased from Mrs. Sarah Gaffney for £65. A further cost of £450 was put aside to build the weatherboard church.

St Finn Barr's Catholic church was opened on Sunday 10th June 1900 with the celebration of High Mass by His Lordship Dr. Delany, Rev. Father O'Regan and Rev. Fathers Bernard Murphy from Zeehan and James Murphy of New Norfolk. An excursion train between Zeehan and Strahan was advertised for the opening.

With the decline of the Catholic population at Strahan the church was sold around 2005, it has been a private residence.

The Anglican church is used by the Catholics to celebrate Mass.

This building has recently listed for sale.
