Overview
The Methodist church at Supply River was built in 1861, at the time the only other church in the West Tamar was the Sidmouth Kirk.
In 1857 Mr. Thomas Travers rode to Launceston to bring back Rev. T.B. Harris to administer a man dying man in the bush, this precipitated the need for a clergyman in the district. During this period services were held by local laymen in the home of Mr. William Brown in the morning and Mr. Stephen Kerrison in the afternoon.
Fifty pounds was each donated by Messrs. Brown, Kerrison and Travers and with voluntary labour the hand-hewn and split timber church was built by young and old.
The plates at the bottom of the church measured 5 x 5 and the studs 4 x 3, a pulpit was a gift from a friend, this was carried by four young sturdy men 6 miles to its destination. The walls and roof were originally lined with plaster, but after high winds twisted parts of the building the plaster began to crack. The plaster was replaced with pine boards.
An article in the Examiner newspaper written by Rachel Williams in November 2004 wrote:
The scene at the Supply River Church on Sunday was reminiscent of its early glory days as about 130 people attended an open day to celebrate recent restoration works... a group of local volunteers has worked at the site this year restoring old graves to former neatness.
This building stands today as a monument to the craftsmanship of a bygone era.
