St Mary the Virgin or St Mary's

Early Anglican services were first held on the 'Rostrevor Estate', the old schoolhouse and the old Spring Bay Council Chambers , it was not until the spirited Rev. C.W. Power inspired local church goers to raise fund for a church.

Stone from the Oakhampton quarry was used at a cost 750 pounds. The pure white front altar stone also came from Oakhampton, it was beautifully carved by Mr. Richards a local craftsman and inspired by the Oxford Movement in England. Archdeacon Hales wrote a letter of protest to the council objecting to the altar and called for its removal. He later regretted his protest and explained that since it was such a massive structure, the cost of replacing it with a wooden one would be very great, and the church had insufficient funds for this purpose.

The foundation stone for St Mary's was laid on the 17th December 1880 and the first service took place on 2nd February 1883, the church was not consecrated until February 1887.

The contractor Mr. Robinson had several difficulties and drawbacks during the build due to the increase in labour and obtaining artisans. The church has a nave, chancel and vestry like the English style. The nave is 40 feet in length, with five two-light coloured window. The chancel is 22 feet with a pitch of the arch 22 feet, it is a fine specimen of stone cutting. The magnificently carved stone font by Mr. Richards, was also from Oakhampton and a gift from Mr. William Lester.

The following report is from The Mercury newspaper in February 1883:

[From our own Correspondent] - The new church at Spring Bay, or Triabunna, as it is now called, was opened for divine service on Friday, the 2nd inst. by the Dean of Hobart (the Very Rev. H.B. Bromby), assisted by the Rev. C.W. Power and the local incumbent, the Rev. H. Hancock. There was a goodly muster upon the occasion ... The unanimous conclusion was that the church was a credit to all concerned, first to the place, as an ornament to the township secondly, to the congregation, who by their liberality enabled it to be erected, then to the architects for the beauty and harmony of the design, next to the contractor for the substantial nature of the work, and the superior material used ...

St. Mary's Church holds considerable historical heritage significance, exemplifying the defining architectural features of a Victorian Free Gothic ecclesiastical structure. Constructed using rock-faced ashlar masonry, the church embodies the craftsmanship and stylistic principles that were prevalent during the Victorian era. Its design reflects the period’s emphasis on pointed arches, steep gables, and intricate stonework, all hallmarks of the Gothic Revival movement. As a preserved architectural specimen, St. Mary's Church offers valuable insight into 19th-century ecclesiastical construction practices and serves as an enduring testament to the artistic and cultural aspirations of its time.

This church was on the list to be sold in 2018, but removed and is still in use.
