St Matthias'

In the early years of settlement, religious observance in Woodsdale took place in private homes, reflecting the close-knit and resourceful nature of the local community. A formal proposal for the establishment of a dedicated church was advanced in 1891.

St Matthias’ Church, Woodsdale, forms part of the Buckland parish. The foundation stone of the building was ceremonially laid on 30th July 1909. Constructed in the Gothic style, the church was built using timber cut locally and lined with pine, at a total cost of £230. At the time of its opening, an outstanding debt of £30 remained.

The architectural work was undertaken by local contractors—brothers P.C. and George Wagner. In a gesture of familial devotion, the younger members of the Wagner family donated a finely carved altar table, prayer desk, and lectern. Additional furnishings were contributed by Mr. and Mrs. Ben Smith, who presented several church seats of approved design, crafted from American red pine.

An evocative description of the church’s consecration appeared in the Church News on 1 April 1911

“Far from the maddening Crowd”, in the populous rural district of Woodsdale, has been erected a little church, the dedication of which is to S. Matthias was performed in the presence of a crowded congregation, on Sunday afternoon, March 12, by the Archdeacon of Hobart, acting on behalf of the Bishop, and assisted by the Rev. Wilfrid Earle, rector of Buckland, which includes Woodsdale.”

To this day, St Matthias’ Church remains in active use and is listed on the East Coast Anglican Church website—a testament to its enduring place in the spiritual and architectural heritage of the region.
