St Fursaeus'

During the 1890s Zeehan became the third largest town in Tasmania, thanks to its mining boom. Catholic's were estimated to be half of the population.

The first Catholic Church, St Furseus was built under Father T.M. O'Callaghan, and was opened on the 29th November 1891. When Father Bernard Murphy took over as parish priest 1893 he worked tirelessly for the parish and doubled the size of the church.

The old timber building with a choir gallery was located in the main street of town. This church seated around 500 people. Father Murphy planned a new brick church, and made some new additions to the convent building in 1900, the cost was £250.
