Port Arthur Convict Church

Port Arthur penal settlement was established as a punishment station, and known for harsh and cruel punishment. It began in 1830 as a small timber station and was still being used until in the late 1870s. Many of the remaining convicts at Port Arthur had their photographs taken at this time. Land was put up for auction, many of the buildings were dismantled and it was around this time the name was changed to Carnarvon. In the 1890s fires caused further destruction to the buildings.

The Church is a large, handsome and excellent building well arranged. About six hundred Protestants attend service. The service is held for the Roman Catholics, in the Schoolroom which is large, and built of wood, with two fire places. Books are circulated weekly among the men.
