Overview

The original building was formerly the single men's quarters owned by Savage River Mines. The building was offered for purchase at the price of $1. The Anglican Archdeacon A.G. Costello quickly paid the $1 and stated that it was the cheapest church he'd ever help finance. Contractors removed some of the walls in return for 3 months accommodation.

The Savage River Community Church was dedicated on the 12th May 1968, it was described as 's a splendid example of the power of the ecumenical movement' by Dr. Guilford Young the Catholic Archbishop of Hobart. The church was packed with locals and visiting clergy. In addition to Archbishop Young, the Bishop of Tasmania, the Right Rev. R.F. Davies, President of the Tasmanian Council of Churches, Rev. J. Laurndre, the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church, Rev. W. Drooges, the Chairman of the Methodist Conference, Rev. H. Freeman and the President of the Baptist Union of Tasmania Rev. K. Smith all attended.

With the scaling down of the Savage River Mines, worshippers moved away and the church fell into disrepair. After 27 years the final service was held on the 9th April 1995.

In March 1995 it was reported that the Neighbourhood House was used for church meetings.
