Overview
St John the Baptist church was designed by the architect Henry Hunter.
The foundation stone was laid on the 25th May 1858 and blessed by Bishop Willson. A bottle with suitable inscriptions and coins were placed in the stone. Subscriptions and money from visitors amounted to fifty pounds, this was placed upon the stone towards the building of an edifice.
The church opened on the 3rd March 1859. The painting below displays this stone building; sadly it was demolished in August 1963.
