Overview

The Church of the Incarnation in Lindisfarne, Tasmania, is a Catholic church of historic significance, known for its unique brutalist design. The church was consecrated in October 1967 and was the first new post-Vatican Council church in the state. The design was created by parishioner and architect Lindsay Wallace Johnston, and aimed to build community by embracing the ideals of New Brutalism.

The Church of the Incarnation is also of interest among brutalist (1950s-1970s architecture) in Australia for its apparent alignment with the progressive ideals of the mid-1950s. Archbishop Guilford Young, who began his episcopate in Hobart in 1955, had a keen interest in architecture and worked to modernize and reform the church, advocating for "healthily modern" church architecture. The Church of the Incarnation is a testament to Young's vision and the efforts to create modern, non-monumental churches with limited resources.
