Overview

Formed in the seventeenth century the Congregational or Independent church consisted of independent congregations, each independent of outside authority; whose actions were decided by all members. The Congregationalists believed in plain religion without any form of ritual.

The Congregational Fellowship was formed in Hobart Town on the 15th March 1832. In 1833 a Sunday School and mission was formed in the Berea Chapel, Chapel Lane off Liverpool Street and was in connection with the Brisbane Street Chapel.

Henry Hopkins was responsible for the erection of the Berea Chapel which included a small cottage. Hopkins gave this property to the Congregational Union in 1846. For many years the building was used as a Mission.
