Overview

The Lower Collins Street Independent Congregational Chapel was a generous gift from Mr. Henry Hopkins.

The following advertisement was placed in The Tasmanian newspaper on Friday the 30th December 1836:

Independent Chapel, Collins Street
THE above Chapel will be open for
Public Worship on Sabbath ,January 1, 1837.
Service will commence in the Morning at eleven,
and in the Evening at half-past six.
Persons desirous of taking Sittings may obtain
them of Mr. Robertson, Elizabeth-street.
Dec. 30, 1836.

In 1857 this building was subsequently acquired by the Church of Scotland and became known as the Knox Free Church. To mark its first anniversary in 1858, a commemorative service was held. The morning sermon was delivered by the Rev. W. Nicholson, while the evening address was given by the Rev. J. Downes. On both occasions, a collection was taken to assist in reducing the debt incurred from the purchase of the church.
