Carlton Congregational Chapel

According to a newspaper report in February 1841 a Chapel at Carlton was in progress. The book Congregationalism in Tasmania 1830-1977 by Theo E. Sharples states that the chapel was opened in January 1841 and a heritage survey states the chapel was opened for public worship on 10th January 1841 by the Rev. J. Beazley.

Land was donated by Mr. John Hall McGinniss in 1837 for a church, school, cemetery and playground, the original grant was to Joseph Steele. The chapel is well situated on the old road between Carlton and Lewisham overlooking the Carlton River. Services were held in the chapel for 90 years with other denominations using it. The last service was conducted in 1930.

Constructed of free stone with squared stone quoins , the building has a timber floor tied with steel tie rods. Rectangular in shape with an end door, it has three curved headed windows. Restoration has been undertaken on the stonework to stabilise the building and the shingled roof was replaced with iron.

This chapel is listed on the Tasmanian Heritage Register, THR ID No. 5323

In June 2023 the property was owned by Chris Wisbey and Sally Dakis.
