Overview

On the 11th of August 1895, the Salvation Army inaugurated their newly established barracks in Lower Barrington, marking a significant milestone in their presence within the community.

According to Miss Hilda Rockliff's recollection, Mr. John Harry French generously provided a split paling and shingle building on his property known as Wattle Grove for the Salvation Army to use as a hall. Weekly services were conducted every Tuesday evening, with Salvation Army officers making the journey from Latrobe to lead these gatherings. They would spend the night before returning to Latrobe the following day. Additionally, regular harvest thanksgiving services were observed, fostering community participation and support.

As of 2022, the site of Wattle Grove has evolved into Wattle Grove Retreat, serving as a Bed & Breakfast accommodation, thus continuing its role in the local community albeit in a different capacity.
