Lindisfarne Congregational Church

In the early 1900s, Hobart solicitor M. W. Simmons generously donated land at Lindisfarne for the establishment of a Congregational church, providing the foundation for a permanent place of worship.

The church was designed by Mr F. Ricards, whose plans reflected a modified Early English style—simple yet dignified—with brick walls and stone facings. Construction was undertaken by Mr. W. Cooper, who completed the building within six months.

On 27th May 1903, the foundation stone was laid by Rev. George Clarke during a well-attended ceremony, with steamers transporting supporters from Hobart and Bellerive. The church officially opened on 4th November 1903, offering seating for approximately 200 worshippers.

In 1908, a school hall and vestry were added to the church complex, enhancing its facilities for both worship and community use. Further alterations and extensions were carried out in 1965, reflecting the evolving needs of the congregation.

In 1977, the Lindisfarne Congregational Church became part of the Uniting Church in Australia, continuing its legacy of service within the community. See No 703 Lindisfarne Uniting Church.
