Lindisfarne Uniting Church

The Uniting Church in Australia (UCA) emerged in 1977 as the product of a landmark union between the Methodist, Presbyterian, and Congregational traditions. Well before this national amalgamation, local initiatives had already anticipated the spirit of cooperation. In 1956, the congregations of Lindisfarne and Cambridge, together with Richmond, explored the formation of a united body that would allow them to share resources, buildings, and meeting spaces rather than establishing three separate churches in each centre. This collaboration gave rise to the Lindisfarne–Cambridge–Richmond United Congregations.

The Lindisfarne church, located at 198 East Derwent Highway, became a central part of this arrangement. However, Richmond ultimately chose not to proceed with the union, leaving Lindisfarne and Cambridge to carry forward the experiment in shared ministry. Their efforts foreshadowed the broader ecumenical movement that culminated two decades later in the creation of the UCA, embedding Lindisfarne’s story within the wider narrative of Australian church union.

Regular weekly worship services were maintained at both Lindisfarne and Bellerive until March 2020. In that month, the Lindisfarne and Bellerive congregations formally united to share services. This transition signified not only a practical response to changing circumstances but also a reaffirmation of shared faith and community between the two congregations. This arrangement continuted until April 2025, when the Lindisfarne church held its final service and the building was formally de‑consecrated.

After a period of vacancy, the Lindisfarne church building was acquired by the Hobart Muslim Community in August 2025, marking a new chapter in its history.
