Overview
The below information is from Dominic College's website and facebook page.
The first chapel (1945-1946) was on the left inside Grantleigh, where the reception is now. It was set up when Boys' Town was started in May 1945 and the boys who lived there went to school in Moonah and Hobart.
The second chapel (1946-1951) was set up in a hut attached to the back of Grantleigh. Another hut was used as a dormitory and another for bathrooms.
The third chapel at Dominic College was in the Boys' Town building
The fourth chapel at Dominic College was the Savio Chapel.
On Saturday night 24 May 2003 the Savio Chapel was set alight by a 19-year old from West Hobart. There was no connection or motive discovered.
The school holidays had begun on the Friday. The fire was burning for as long as two hours before one of the Salesians was woken by the sound of falling debris in the early hours of Sunday morning. Thick fog and the already advanced state of the fire meant that the fire service could do little but protect the other school buildings.
Built on the site of the Savio Chapel under the direction of old scholar architect, Elvio Brianese (Class of 1982), the Dominic College Chapel was completed at the end of 2006 and officially opened in 2007.
This Chapel has a prominent position within the College environment and in the life of the Dominic College community. It was built in 2006, designed by Dominic Old Scholar Elvio Brianese and has won at least eight awards for its unique design and architectural innovations.
