Overview

The foundation stone was laid by the Governor, Sir John Franklin in 1839. The large Scottish population raised £400 towards the cost and the Government agreed to an additional gift of £600. It is reputed that Rev. Robert Russell brought with him the drawings for the Kirk.

The Colonial Times newspaper of the 7th July 1840 reported the following:

Scotch Church, Evandale. - We are pleased to remark, that our friends and fellow colonists on "the other side," are taking the lead of us in every way. At Evandale, the sum of £1,300 has been quickly subscribed, for the erection of a Scotch Church, which is now nearly finished, while between £400 and £500 are now in hand, towards the building of a manse for a Minister.

On Sunday 5th September 1840 a large congregation assembled despite the heavy rain and almost impassable tracks for the opening of St Andrew's Kirk at Evandale.

This church is still in use.
