Wyena Methodist Church

The placename "Wyena" is recorded in Tasmania as meaning "small timber" in the Aboriginal language. The rural area of Wyena is located approximately 27 km to the west of Scottsdale and 15 km to the northeast of Lilydale.

In September 1889, the General Manager of the Government Railways declared the opening of a new railway siding on the Scottsdale line and named it Wyena.

In the year 1922, musical concerts were conducted in the Wyena school to raise funds for the Methodist Parsonage. The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported on these events in March of that year.

WYENA - Harvest thanksgiving services in connection with the Methodist Church took place here on Sunday, when the church was nicely decorated by the ladies of the congregation. The service was conducted by Rev. Strickland of Lilydale, and there was a good congregation. The usual social and sale of gifts in connection with the above was held on Monday night, when musical items and recitations were given and appeared by a good gathering of residents and friends. Rev. Strickland, who acted as auctioneer, succeeded in a creditable manner, and a fair amount was netted for the church funds. The ladies supplied supper.

Another report in March 1924 states that 'harvest home services' were held in the Methodist Church at Wyena. It is not clear where this church building was located. This map of Wyena in April 1921 shows the Railway Station located at the bottom left.
