Overview

The Salvation Army was established in Ulverstone on the 16th December 1886, their meetings were held in a tin shed in the Main Street. It was not until 1894 their purpose built barracks was erected.

The following report appeared in The Tasmanian newspaper on Saturday 11th August 1894.

ULVERSTONE - In the building line very little is being done except the Salvation Army barracks, which will be a roomy building, and is being built on land generously donated by Mr. James Smith, of Westwood, who is always to the fore in any deserving object. The framework of the building is already erected, the work being done by the adherents of the Army themselves, and at the present rate of progress it should be completed in a very short period.

A Property Department Scheme Sheet dated July 1956 describes the following:

Cost of Land £1,025 (transfer and re-erection of hall on new site at Lot 25 Victoria Street)

Legal expenses £34-4-0

Book value of existing hall £105-0-0

Re-built hall £3,485-12-11

Total of £4,649-16-11

In June 1977 a new place of worship was built on the site at Victoria Street at a cost of $57,000.
