Overview
Early Presbyterian services were held in William's Hall, Linton's Hall and the Masonic Hall. Steps were undertaken at a meeting in February 1897 to raise funds to build their own church, at this meeting Mr. Honiball offered a 30 feet block fronting on Wilson Street on which to build the church.
The foundation stone for St Andrew's church was laid in September 1897 by the Rev. Dr. Scott assisted by Rev. R. Bayles.
Constructed of weatherboards at a cost of around £300 it was expected to seat about 250 people when completed. Mr. H.E. Gooding was the architect and Mr. F. Kendal was the builder. The church measured 50ft x 30ft with a vestibule 18ft x 6ft, the roof was made of corrugated iron.
St Andrew's opening service was conducted by Rev. J.G. Millar (sometimes written Miller) on 22nd November 1897.
In January 1972 the Presbyterian and Methodist churches on the West Coast joined forces and became the West Coast United Church.
