Overview

This chapel has been known as the Melanesian Mission Chapel and also the Patteson Memorial Chapel. It is a beautiful intricate and ornate building and has been in use since 1880. Established as a memorial to Bishop John Coleridge Patteson, who in 1861 was ordained as the Bishop of Melanesia.

It was built mainly by Mission workers and Melanesian students, with some community assistance. Materials were imported from as far away as England and supplemented with Norfolk Island pine and local quarried stone from the Kingston convict area. Delays awaiting for supplies held up the construction for around five years. Finally on the 7th December 1880 the chapel was consecrated.
