Overview
The first chapel at Somerset (Cam) was a small paling and shingle construction.
Dorothea Henslowe states that the first church, St Barnabas, was built by 1855 and that a second timber church was built in 1882 .
Kerry Pink in his book And Wealth for Toll states that it was built by Mr. Thomas Wragg and opened by Bishop Nixon in 1862.
In August 1879 newspaper reports that a sum of money had been collected for the erection of St Barnabas Church at Somerset. This church was opened on Sunday 13th May 1883 by Venerable Archdeacon Hales.
The building of this place of worship has long been talked of, and though not actually a case of necessity (the Church of England service having been conducted for the past 21 years in a small building originally erected for that purpose by Mr. Wragg, but since used also as a school-room) undoubtedly it is an advantage to have a building set apart and built by the people themselves for divine service
See No 364 St Barnabas.
