Overview
On Sunday the 1st of January 1859 the opening services of the Wesleyan Chapel and School House at Butleigh Hill, Green Rises took place. Sermons were conducted by Messrs Crookes and Norwood who travelled from Launceston.
In 1907 the church was closed while renovations and alteration were made, the ceiling was low and it was reported this made it hard to speak or sing, so the roof was raised to 4ft and lined with hardwood. The church re-opened in May 1907.
In the early hours of Wednesday the 5th November 1947 the church was destroyed by fire. The Advocate newspaper in November 1947 reported:
CHURCH DESTROYED Launceston, Wednesday - The Butleigh Hill Methodist Church was destroyed by fire about 2 o'clock this morning. The church was 8 miles from Cressy and built in 1856 (sic).
