Overview

A town was laid out in the Shannon area, it was to be called Eberington, but this was never developed.

The foundation stone for the Shannon church was laid on the 19th April 1877 by Frederick Synot, J.P. who contributed £100 to the building fund. A further £260 was paid 'in hand'. A bottle containing small coins, a newspaper of the day and name of the builder were placed under the stone.

Funds for the church are believed to have come via donations from an annual race meeting held at 'The Hermitage'. The church was to be used for all Protestant denominations.

The new church was officially opened on Tuesday 2nd October 1878.

Congregations were small and around 1958 the church closed. Furnishings from the building were moved to Bothwell. Later the interior of the church was burnt.
