Bridgewater Probation Station Chapel

Prisoner's were sentenced to work on the roads in parties or road gangs, this was the case in 1830 when convicts from Jericho were moved to Bridgewater to repair the main link between the north and south of the state. It was reported that the buildings were in ruins and needed repairing, with eleven badly built solitary cells that were damp. Stationed there was one superintendent, a storekeeper and two overseers plus 66 convicts. Men were employed on the causeway between Stony Point (Whitestone Point) and Cove Point on the northern bank.

Religious services were held by visiting clergymen from the Presbyterian church, who visited once a week, the Roman Catholic, but none from Church of England. There was no communication nor moral instruction given to the convicts, only the formal service from the pulpit.
