Mayberry Church of Christ

Mayberry, a small settlement at the base of the majestic Great Western Tiers, boasts stunning natural beauty and is located near the picturesque limestone Marakoopa Caves. The name Mayberry was derived from the names of two cows belonging to an early settler, 'May' and 'Berry'.

In 1919, education records reveal that a school was established at Circular Ponds, which later became known as Mayberry. Services were conducted in the old school hall, where in November 1927 a mission lecture was held. Ten years later, a concert party was held at Mole Creek to raise funds for repairs to the aging Mayberry school hall.

Mr. Harold Street, in his 1983 memoirs, recounts his experiences serving the Church of Christ in Tasmania and the mainland, including his time at Mayberry and its surroundings:

Mayberry is a small farming district and at the time of which I write, four brothers Byard lived and worked there and on Sunday, with their families, they held services in the old school building. Later in the day they would drive to Mole Creek for the evening Meeting. ... The local wags referred to Mayberry with its holes and caves as the 'Holey City'.

In April 1944 at the Church of Christ conference, Mayberry was received into the association.

In the education records held at the Tasmanian Archives, there is mention of the disposition of Circular Ponds School between October 1962 and February 1963.
