Bethel Chapel

On the 16th of December, 1827, the Bethel Flag was hoisted in Van Diemen's Land, marking a significant moment in maritime religious history. The term "Bethel" was henceforth to be adopted by all societies dedicated to advancing the spiritual well-being of seamen, serving as a symbol of their collective mission to foster religious observance among those who traversed the seas. Churchmen from the Wesleyan, Presbyterian, Independent, and Baptist traditions were all actively involved in the efforts of the Bethel Union.

A group of individuals, dedicated to advancing the religious cause among sailors, envisioned a movement to improve the conditions of ship crews and disseminate Divine knowledge to them as they visited ports across the globe.

A request was made to Captain Plunkett of the ship Persian for permission to conduct Divine Worship on the deck of his vessel. In response, he was provided with a Bethel Flag to signify this sacred observance. Other ships were later used.

Jarman's 1858 map of Hobart Town identifies the location of 'Bethel' as being situated on New Wharf.
