Overview
The origins of this edifice trace back to its construction in 1866, conceived initially as a space for worship and education within the Congregational tradition. Over the ensuing decades, the building underwent a series of transformations, each chapter adding layers to its rich narrative.
From 1901 to 1929, a new role beckoned as the structure transitioned into a state school, serving as a bastion of learning and enlightenment for generations of students. Yet, as the tides of time shifted, so too did the building's purpose. In 1942, ownership transferred to the Church of England, signaling a return to its ecclesiastical roots and a renewed dedication to spiritual stewardship.
However, the true testament to the building's resilience lies in its restoration in 1990, a labour of love undertaken by members of the esteemed Dick Family. This noble endeavor, undertaken in memory of George Abercromby Dick (1909-1987), former owner of the nearby Mt. Vernon Estate and a stalwart trustee of the diocese for two decades, breathed new life into the venerable structure.
Through their collective efforts, the Dick Family honored not only the memory of a beloved patriarch but also preserved a tangible link to the region's storied past. Today, as the building stands restored to its former glory, it serves as a living testament to the enduring legacy of faith, education, and community stewardship that has shaped its journey through time.
