St Mary's - Star of the Sea Church

The inception of religious services in the Penguin parish traces back to gatherings held in the residence of Mr. McKenna at Howth. However, before the establishment of a dedicated church, Masses were conducted in Anthon's Hall, located on Main Street, which later transitioned into the site of the Caltex service station.

An excerpt from The Advocate newspaper dated 18th November 1902, highlights a significant milestone in the community's religious journey. It recounts the inaugural Sunday service conducted by Rev Father O'Reilly in the Town Hall, attended by a sizable congregation. The musical accompaniment was graciously provided by Misses Mylan and Tracey of Burnie, underscoring the collaborative spirit of the occasion.

The foundation stone for St. Mary's Church was laid on the 18th October 1908, a momentous event attended by approximately 400 individuals. Speculations arose that Captain Anthon may have generously contributed the land for the church, situated in King Edward Street, near its present location.

On the 7th March 1909, St. Mary's Church was officially opened and blessed by the Most Rev. Dr. D. Delaney, Archbishop of Hobart, with Fr. Dowling assisting in the ceremony. Constructed primarily of weatherboards under the supervision of contractor Mr. C. Monson, the church boasted dimensions of 60 feet by 30 feet, inclusive of a porch and vestry. Noteworthy architectural elements included Gothic-designed doors and lath-and-plaster walls complemented by varnished timber dado panels.

Despite the passage of time, St. Mary's Church continues to serve as a beacon of spiritual guidance and communal unity in the Penguin parish, preserving its historical significance through ongoing worship and reverence.
