Church of Mary

The Church of Mary replaced the convict building on Waterloo Point.

Officially opened on the 27th September 1931 by the Very Rev. Father Denis Murphy The following notice appeared in The Standard on the 1st October 1931.

For a number of years now the Catholics of Swansea have been working for the erection of a new church in their district. It was not anticipated that the new building would be erected for some time, but through the generosity of Miss Cecilia Buckley, the work was able to be taken in hand some 2½ months ago. Messrs. Jas. Dunn and sons, submitted the plan for a neat and compact little structure in brick and building operations were started forthwith.

Situated on the main road, the brick church measures 40ft x 19ft and has been beautiful furnished using Tasmanian blackwood altar rails, which were reported to have originally been part of the Huon bridge. The pews are made from Tasmanian oak. The font and organ are reputed to have come from the old church on Waterloo Point.
