St Anne's

Bishop Wilson, in 1857 applied for a grant of land to build a Catholic church at at Buckland. The Catholic population was not large enough so no church was built. The one acre still belonged to the Catholic Church in 1979.

Triabunna had a larger population of Catholic families and in 1864 three acres were granted for a church, school and burial ground.

St Anne's Catholic church was designed by the architect Henry Hunter of Hobart Town, who also oversaw the building of St. Mary's Cathedral in Hobart. The church was constructed by Mr. Felmingham using uncut stone believed to have come from the Okehampton Quarry. The roof was made of shingles.

The new church opened on St Patrick's Day, 17th March 1869, the following is from the Catholic Standard in March 1869:

... On Wednesday, the 17th instant, the feast of St. Patrick the Apostle of Ireland' His Lordship the Bishop of Hobart Town ... dedicated the above church to the service of the Almighty God, under the invocation of St Anne, the mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary ... His Lordship also complimented the architect , Mr. H Hunter, on the chaste and artistic designs of the new church, and the builder Mr. Felmingham ...

During the 1880s a porch and vestry were added and in 1888 Louisa Anne Meredith noted local author and artist donated a bell (see letter below). Around 1900 the shingled roof was replaced with iron and the walls with rendered cement. In 1978 the eastern wall had to be replaced with cement blocks, it was covered with rough cement to match the other walls.

This church is still in use today.
