Overview

Upon the death in 1888 of John Jones of the Rose Hill Estate, his last will and codicil bequeathed two acres of land and the sum of £250 for fencing of the land to the Trustees of the Church of England. The conditions were that the Trustees had to build and fence within three years.

Unfortunately the church Trustees failed under the conditions imposed and Bishop Montgomery had a meeting with late Mr. John Jones' son, the owner at the time. He informed the Bishop that if all the family members agreed the money would be paid for the purpose of building the church in a more central location on Rose Hill.

Launceston architect Mr. North designed a small wooden structure with a stone foundation. Mr. G. Goddard of Bothwell was contracted to build it for the amount of £210. There were extra costs for fitting out the church. Mr. Goddard started the work on the 27th July 1892.

The first service was held in early 1893, the following report was in the Launceston Examiner October 1993.

BISHOP MONGOMERY - This morning service at St John's Church yesterday was conducted by Bishop Montgomery, who arrived by express train from Hobart on Saturday. ...

This delightful little weatherboard church was sold under the Anglican church redress scheme, it was purchased by the Jones family who erected a new plaque.
