Overview
The plaque at the front entrance of St Mark's Church commemorates its consecration on December 14, 1865. This wooden church stands as a testament to the generosity and community spirit of its benefactors. The land on which St Mark's is built was a gift from Mr. John Gatenby, a local figure whose contribution laid the foundation for this place of worship. Furthermore, the church was endowed by the O'Connor family from Connorville, whose support ensured its establishment and continued existence. The church not only serves as a religious sanctuary but also as a historical monument, reflecting the collaborative efforts and devout faith of the local community in the mid-19th century.
The Tasmanian Morning Hearld newspaper reported in December 1865:
... There was a confirmation on the 13th at Cressy, and on the 14th at Lake River, with the consecration of the Church and Cemetery, the sites of which had been conveyed to the Synod Trustees by a gift of T. Gatenby. Esq ...
Note the newspaper reports the church was St Luke's and that T. Gatenby gave the land, however, the publication The Gatenby Saga records it was John Gatenby.
In 2018 this church was on the list to be sold. A link is attached regarding its closure.
