Tamar Street Congregational (Independent) Chapel

In 1835, Governor Arthur granted land on Tamar Street for an Independent Chapel (Congregational) to serve the ministry needs of the Reverend Charles Price.

Contractor William Morrison commenced work on the chapel in late 1836, and it was first used in June 1837. Its appearance was similar to that of the contemporary Infant School on Frederick Street, although more overtly Grecian in its detailing.

Growth of the congregation in the 1890s, after Price was succeeded by the Reverend G. H. Wright, created need for a new church building. This was built to the design of architect Alfred Luttrell, by McEwan & Sons in 1896. It could seat 375, and was named ‘Price’s Memorial Hall’.

An almost identical building was erected by the same denomination in Latrobe, and that building is still standing.

Attendances declined after WWI, and the congregation amalgamated with the Congregationalist of Christ Church in Frederick Street.

The old church was demolished in 1920. The Examiner newspaper in early September of that year, reported the building was auctioned for £62.

The Exclusive Brethren used the hall for a time, and it was converted to secular use in 1965.
