Overview
The Presbyterian's held their first service in Cairn's Hall, McNamara Street Queenstown on the 2nd July 1898, the service was conducted by Mr. R.A. Barton
At 3 o'clock on the 7th December 1899 Marion Sticht, the wife of Robert Carl Sticht laid the foundation stone for the Queenstown Presbyterian church. Robert Carl Sticht was the General Manager of the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company and an important man in Queenstown.
While not entirely completed, the new building was opened on Sunday 16th September 1900 free of debt. Twenty five members of the Queenstown Highland Company dressed in their kilts and marched from the railway station to church prior to commencement. They formed two lines, one each side of the entrance as a guard of honour. The image from the Weekly Courier (below) whilst dated 1904 may have been taken at the opening.
In 1972 the Presbyterian and Methodist churches at Queenstown. Strahan, Rosebery & Zeehan joined to form the West Coast United Church.
