Wesley Dale Private Chapel

In 1875, the construction of this residence commenced under the patronage of Henry Reed, who commissioned it as his rural sanctuary. Reed found solace and cherished moments with his loved ones at Mountain Villa in Wesley Dale, where he frequently retreated. He gained acclaim for his role in the exploration of the Mole Creek caves, a discovery that etched his name in history. However, as time progressed, his health declined precipitously.

This edifice bears profound historical significance, showcasing the quintessential brick Victorian Picturesque Gothic farmhouse, alongside its associated outbuildings. These defining features are evident in both the external structure and construction techniques, as well as the intricate detailing, both inside and out.

Internally, the extensive use of Blackwood for joinery, including Gothic-inspired fireplaces, adds to the overall ambiance of the period.

In addition to the main residence, the site encompasses a variety of other structures that contribute to its historical narrative. These include a brick Victorian Rustic Gothic chapel, the landscape is adorned with English Oaks, Chestnuts, and a venerable tall eucalyptus tree, further enriching the historical tapestry of the property.

On the 10th of October 1880, Henry Reed breathed his last at Mount Pleasant. In a poignant letter penned to a confidant, he articulated his life's ethos: "I have been so accustomed to invest my whole being into every endeavor, striving for excellence in all matters, both spiritual and worldly. It deeply troubles me to witness incomplete or haphazard efforts. Yet, in my twilight years, I must beseech the Lord for the wisdom to overlook and forgive many shortcomings."
