Ebenezer Chapel

Since 7 October 1855, the United Methoidst Free Church congregation conducted regular religious services and Sabbath-school instruction in a modest timber structure situated at the rear of the present allotment. For many years, the need for a more capacious and fitting place of worship in the district had been increasingly acknowledged.

On 7 October 1868, the land and existing premises were formally conveyed to twelve trustees, in accordance with the provisions of the Deed of Reference for the Settlement of Chapels on Trust for the benefit of the United Methodist Free Churches.

The foundation stone for the Ebenezer Chapel was laid on 14th July 1869 by Governor Du Cane, in the presence of a large gathering and several Protestant ministers. During the ceremony, the Church Secretary read a statement outlining the church’s formation and its affiliation with the United Methodist Free Churches, which was then placed within the stone.

Governor Du Cane expressed confidence that the dedication shown thus far would continue through to completion, and he hoped his presence offered encouragement to the cause.

The estimated cost of the chapel was stated to be approximately £1,400, of which £500 had already been raised, leaving a balance of £900 yet to be secured.

Constructed by Messrs. Shield and Ware, the chapel was designed by architect E. C. Rowntree. Built of brick with stone detailing, the structure measures 80 by 45 feet and includes a portico, porches, chapel, class room, vestry, and chapel keeper’s quarters. It accommodates up to 400 people and features a gently sloped floor. Opening services began last Thursday and continued through the weekend, concluding with a tea and public meeting.

Overthe ensuring years this building was used as a college and by other organisations.

The former chapel was sold in November 2019 and has since been converted into a private residence, comprising four bedrooms and accompanying bathrooms.
