Overview
The Salvation Army was founded by the Reverend William Booth, in London, in 1865. Local philanthropist and preacher, Henry Reed, provided Booth with £5000 to establish the Salvation Army in Launceston in 1883. In June 1885, the foundation stone was laid for the meeting place, a ‘citadel’ as the gathering places of this denomination are known, and when completed it was said to be capable of holding 1500 people. The 1880s timber building was replaced with a modern structure in 1966.
