St Paul's Chapel by the Sea

The construction of this notable brick chapel was completed in 1980. It houses numerous fixtures originally from St. Paul's Anglican Church in Launceston, including stained glass windows, memorial tablets, and the church organ. St. Paul's, a sizable timber structure, was located to the south of the city centre, in close proximity to the Launceston General Hospital in Cleveland Street.

Quote from St Paul's - Past and Present 1854-1985 :

... It is expected that the entry to the proposed Chapel at Low Head will almost be identical with that of the original Church and the stained glass windows, pews. altar and timber bearers at least will be put to work again.

On the 3rd of November, 1980, the chapel was officially opened by the Deputy Premier of Tasmania, the Honourable M.T.C. Barnard, M.H.A. This marked the preservation of a significant element of Tasmanian heritage, now embodied in the form of an inter-denominational chapel, safeguarded for future generations.

In 1983, through the generous bequest of the late Captain Ainsworth, the Seamen's Chapel was added to St. Paul's Chapel by the Sea, serving as a lasting tribute to the memory of his sister, Maria. This chapel is often referred to as the 'Flinders Chapel,' a name derived from its prominent features, including stained glass windows, a bust, and a painting honouring the renowned navigator Matthew Flinders. Another stained glass window pays tribute to George Bass and Sir Joseph Banks.
