Overview

On the 24th of August, 1879, the inhabitants of Turners Marsh gathered to mark the solemn and joyous occasion of the official opening of the Wesleyan Church. This humble wooden edifice, a testament to the faith and dedication of the local community, was filled with worshippers eager to witness this historic moment. The Reverend J.S. Greer of Launceston delivered the inaugural sermon, imparting words of spiritual guidance to the assembled congregation, and thus consecrating the church’s role as a beacon of worship for generations to come.

The land upon which the church stands was generously donated by Mr. Thomas Rowley, whose contribution was instrumental in the establishment of this sacred space. The builder, Mr. Alex Cowey, was duly credited for his craftsmanship in constructing the church, a structure that would serve the spiritual needs of the community. According to the secretary’s report, the total cost of the building amounted to £86 8s 3d. Of this sum, the commendable efforts of the congregation had already raised £61 16s 6d, reflecting the collective commitment of the parishioners to this important endeavour.

When the Uniting Church of Australia (UCA) was formed on the 22nd June 1977 between the Congregational, Methodist & Presbyterian Churches of Australia this church became part of the union.

This building was listed for sale in 2016 and sold, then again in August 2023.
