Bethel Chapel (Wharf Mission Hall)

The Bethal Chapel was situated at the bottom end of St John Street on the corner of William Street at Queen's Wharf.

The Launceston Examiner newspaper reported in July 1845:

The want of accommodation for public worship at the wharf , has long been a subject of regret. Services have sometimes been held during the summer on the desks of vessels, but no united effort has been made in this town to supply the spiritual destitution of seamen visiting the port. It is seldom that sailors leave their vessels on the Sabbath to enter a church; but a bethel chapel is peculiarly their own ...

The Cornwall Chronical newspaper records in July 1846

THE BETEL CHAPEL - This little edifice is in course of erection by Messrs. Twinning and Burton. It stands in an eligible situation and will be a great convenience to the seafaring men and others for whose benefit it is intended. When completed, the Betel will be the twelfth place of worship existing in Launceston.

In early February 1847, a notable assembly convened at the newly constructed Bethal Chapel in Launceston, presided over by the esteemed Henry Reed, Esq. The primary objective of this gathering was to devise a strategy for raising the necessary funds to discharge the debt incurred during the chapel's construction, prior to its consecration for Divine Service. The outstanding sum required to clear this financial obligation amounted to £100-2-0. The chapel was anticipated to officially open its doors for worship on Sunday, the 14th of February.

Another report in the Cornwall Chronicle dated Saturday 6th February stated that the chapel was opened on Thursday 4th February and the sum required was £102.
