Overview
Built in 1827, the Launceston gaol was built to house adults, unfortunately it also housed children as young as eight or nine. This is a troubling aspect of the colonial history of Tasmania and highlights the harsh conditions that were imposed on individuals who were sentenced to serve time in the gaol.
By 1830, government precincts in nine Police Districts typically included a court house, watch-house, gaol house, gaol-keeper's residence, and quarters for the prison staff (Javelin men). In some locations, military barracks and convict barracks for work gangs passing through were also included.
This infrastructure suggests that the colonial government in Tasmania was taking steps to establish law enforcement systems and infrastructure to manage the growing population and increasing criminal activity in the colony.
This building closed in 1917.
