Overview

Wealthy land owner and Catholic convert Roderick O'Connor gave the land for a church in 1860. The foundation stone was laid by his Lordship the Bishop of Hobart on Saturday 7th January 1882.

In December 1883 the Tasmanian News newspaper reported that the Catholic church at Avoca has been completed with the generous contributions of some Catholic’s. The contractors were given credit for the successful completion of their contract.

A small debt remained, but 18 months later with the help of a bazaar, enough funds were raised to remove the debt.

In December 1916 a successful fair was held at Royal George in aid of a new roof for the Avoca Catholic church.

A new brick church was built in 1956, shortly after, the original wooden building was relocated to Rossarden and is now a private residence.
